While building any space, we make sure that we have a concrete foundation that is also aesthetically pleasing. When it comes to driveways, parking spaces, courtyards or gardens in residential or commercial areas, paver blocks are the most popular and viable option in terms of feasibility, diversity as well as beautification. Garden paver manufacturers in Kolkata recommend different kinds of paver blocks, as per your requirement owing to the variety available, in terms of size, shape, design and colour.

Testing Procedure

Pavers blocks should undergo testing to ensure that they are manufactured as per recommended guidelines and to check whether they work properly without any defects. Comprising on the quality of the paver blocks can severely impact its usefulness. The paver blocks can be tested in the following ways:

  • Visual Identification: The first and foremost testing procedure is visually inspecting and identifying cracks or flaking. Generally, the sample blocks are laid out in a random design pattern and observed from a distance in natural daylight. The blocks that do seem tampered, defected or flaky are then discarded.
  • Water Absorption: Paver blocks are especially recommended for flood prone areas as they lead to a better drainage system. The test takes place by immersing the paver blocks in water for 24 hours and then are left to drain for a minute. The block is weighed before and after drying at 107 degrees. On comparing both the weights, the difference in weight should not be more than 6 percent of the mass.
  • Dimensions and Tolerances: By the IS Standards, the paver block thickness should have a minimum value of 50 mm and maximum value of 120mm. Further tests are performed to determine the length, width, thickness, plan area and wearing face area, deviation from squareness test, etc.
  • Abrasion Resistance: Here, we test the block’s ability to withstand wear and tear and chipping or rubbing off because of friction. This test is also specified and done according to the IS Standards.
  • Compressive Strength: The paver blocks’ strength is determined in terms of 28 days compressive strength. The test involves a series of steps and procedures that are listed and done as per the IS Standards, just like the abrasion test and the one for dimensions and tolerances.

Testing of paver blocks ensures that you have laid out a concrete design that will serve you for years to come and will not require major modifications, repair or replacement in the future. Even if certain blocks do wear away with time, repairing and replacing these paver blocks is relatively easy.
